(the estate's second wine; made from an older block in a hot spot that's at what consulting winemaker Thomas Brown describes as "a canopy disadvantage"): Good full medium ruby. Superripe nose hints at dried fruits, with a peppery nuance providing lift but also giving the impression of a wide range of fruit ripeness. Sweet, slightly high-toned red and black fruit flavors are complicated by notes of brown sugar and herbs. Plenty of structure provided by integrated acidity and ripe tannins. And not at all pruney on the palate in spite of the almost roasted nose. The sun-facing side of these vines is picked two weeks earlier than the more shaded side. According to Brown, the new plantings here are denser and provide better shade protection for the fruit.

The acidity and vibrancy of the vintage come through, but ultimately this is one of the more open 2010s readers are likely to come across. A sleek, sensual wine, the 2010 is incredibly inviting from the very first taste. It is also a terrific value within the context of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Jones family purchased their property on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain in 1992. For the first few years they sold fruit before starting to make their own wines in 1996. David Abreu manages the vineyards while Thomas Rivers Brown makes the wines. The 2010s have turned out just as great as I had hoped they would based on my barrel tastings last year. Saturated bright ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of blueberry and licorice pastille. The liqueur-like quality carries through in the mouth, but strong acidity gives a juiciness to the black raspberry, mint and licorice flavors. Finishes chewy and quite long, with serious tannic spine. Stronger than the 2009, but this will need at least a couple years of bottle aging for its very ripe fruit notes and high acidity to come into harmony.
