Score 97/100 · Drink 2028-2050, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Jun 2025

Faintly herbal nuances of dried thyme and sage accent ripe black cherries on the nose of the 2021 Madrona Ranch Proprietary Red. From what is effectively Abreu's HQ at the base of Spring Mountain, it's full-bodied and velvety, dark, earthy and tannic, not surprisingly a bit closed compared to the barrel sample previously reviewed. Give it at least a few years in the cellar, and drink it over the next quarter century.

The 2021 Madrona Ranch is inky hued, with a mammoth-sized nose of ripe black fruits, roasted herbs, licorice, iron, and black olive notes that give this a singular, powerful, incredibly layered style. With full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and plenty of tannins, it gains remarkable freshness and vibrancy with time in the glass and has subtle floral nuances, flawless balance, and an incredible mouthfeel. Hide bottles for 4-6 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles over the following 2-3 decades.

The 2021 Madrona Ranch is dark, powerful and inviting. Graphite, crushed rocks, herbs, chocolate, plum, black cherry and new leather infuse the 2021 with tons of depth. This is a rich, heady Napa Valley red endowed with tons of fruit intensity and equally imposing tannins. I can't wait to taste this from bottle.
