The 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon represents a classy combination of weedy black currant fruit and toasty new oak. Pure, ripe, and medium to full-bodied, with terrific fruit intensity, good spice, moderately sweet tannin, and a long finish, this Cabernet possesses 5-8 years of up-side potential. Good ruby-red. Highly aromatic, spicy, nuanced nose combines cassis, blackberry, baking chocolate, game and smoky oak. Intensely flavored and sharply focused; a superb combination of volume, suave texture and sheer vinosity. Dark berry flavors are complicated by tobacco, dark chocolate, eucalyptus and subtle oak. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins and sneaky persistence. Should develop well in bottle. As good a vintage for this wine as I can recall. Also tasted: 1997 Merlot Coonawarra.
