Lustrous ruby. Concentrated cherry fruit nose laced with vanilla. Sweet oak and plenty of juicy cherry fruit on the palate. Sangiovese's tangy fruit admirably stands up to the considerable new oak. Modernist and quite oak-driven but not without appeal. The chewy tannins give the wine an edge but without dominating the whole. (WS)

Cedar spice box, pine resin, sage, white smoke and medicinal cherry make for an alluring yet slightly wood-influenced bouquet on the 2016 La Fornace Brunello di Montalcino. It’s soft, verging on fleshy kept in check by zesty acids and sour berry fruits, with salty minerals and tannins adding a tactile feel. This closes off with much more energy and freshness than you’d expect, still structured yet needing only a short stay in the cellar to show its best.
