Score 94/100 · Drink 2023-2031, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Sep 2017

Pale, bright yellow. Very ripe scents of yellow peach, musky hazelnut and vanillin oak. Dense, opulent and seamless but tighter in the early going than the Bienvenues-Bâtard, with its powerful stone fruit flavors framed by sound acidity. No easy sweetness here; in fact, this wine is almost painful. Most impressive today on the unflagging back end, which shows a slight phenolic quality as well as terrific lift and citrussy cut, with the note of vanillin oak repeating. Very different in style from the Bienvenues, this will need longer cellaring.

(just one of the four barrels was new, but two others were just a year old): Full yellow. Superripe, nectar-like peach and apricot aromas, along with some vanillin oak and a liqueur-like hint of Poire William. Densely packed, concentrated, sappy and sweet, with a saline quality adding another dimension. This opulent grand cru builds impressively on the very long finish.
