With a dense, mature, salty-caramel nose with a fine citrus note and a hint of red berries, the 2019 Kupfergrube GG from GHB, which is only now coming onto the market, comes at a time when dry 2019 Rieslings, wherever they may come from, tend to struggle. They are usually closed or rough, as if they were not yet ready for the big performance. This Kupfergrube comes to the palate dense and powerful as well as extract-sweet and stands there as a baroque monument, but it remains bitter in the finish. Is this what we have been waiting five years for—a baroque, rich, but currently (yet?) blocked Riesling? Then you'd better wait as many years as it takes, even if it takes seven or eight. Otherwise, Trimbach's Clos-Ste-Hune would hardly have become so famous. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

Late release. Mature nose – intense and ripe fruit. Tastes rich and smoky, with racy acidity and complex, creamy concentration. Grapefruit zest and candied apple, rock salt. A deep, stony well, both elegant and endless. (PS)

The 2019 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube Grosses Gewächs is the current release; it was delayed five years. The intensity of dried lemon peel is immense and ethereal on the nose, with total lift. The palate seems to be made of citrus and stone, almost uncompromising in its stoniness with concentration and superb and chiseled slenderness. It drives ahead with unbound force, deeper and deeper into the rock. It is beautiful to behold that despite all the undeniable power of the site, the defining character is elegance and length—a graceful monument. (Bone-dry)
