The 2023 Rosso Colore evolves in the glass with a glorious bouquet of violet and lavender florals, giving way to sweet spice, stone dust and stemmed wild strawberries. This is an elegant and refined beauty, with crisp mineral tones up front complementing crunchy cherry-berry fruits, all offset by a subtle citrus twang. A complex web of fine tannins frames the experience beautifully. The 2023 finishes long with a pleasantly bitter tinge.

Colore has been submitted to many transformations over the years, including changes to its blend and changes to its vineyard sourcing. Today, Colore represents about 24,000 bottles produced, compared to 40,000 bottles of Testamatta. The Bibi Graetz 2023 Colore sees a tiny 1% of whole-cluster fruit for a hint of buoyancy but otherwise offers plenty of natural spiciness and cinnamon-like flavors from the skins of Sangiovese. Fruit comes from old vines, showing aromas of wild strawberry, iris and blueberry. There is a delicate sweetness to the fruit in this vintage. The wine is elegant and medium weight, emphasizing ethereal nuances over anything heavy or too powerful.

100% Sangiovese. ‘Vintage 2023 was characterized by heavy rainfall during the winter, ensuring adequate water resources for the vines throughout the growing season. Both spring and summer were hot, yet accompanied by sufficient rainfall.’ Harvest 15 September from two vineyards: Lamole and Olmo. Indigenous-yeast fermentation in open-top 225-litre barriques for the smaller parcels and  in casks or stainless-steel tanks for the larger plots. Aged for around 18 months in used barriques and casks. Very pale ruby. Scented and attractive. Sweet start and confident, lightweight, super-appetising fruit. Good balance, but the sort of wine I might expect to find in a wine bar rather than on La Place – however good it is! (JR)

A focused, old-vine sangivoese with dried cherry, mushroom, bark and blackberry aromas and flavors. Turns to lavender and roses. Medium-bodied with savory fruit and a spicy, juicy finish, Bright and vivid, with just a touch of balsamic at the end telling you its soul is in Tuscany. Drink or hold.

Bibi Graetz

Based just outside Florence, Bibi Graetz is something of a maverick in the Tuscan wine scene. Working with old vineyards of indigenous grapes around Chianti, he produces intense wines classified as IGT Toscana; not fitting neatly in either the Super Tuscan or Chianti camp.
