Score 88-90/100 · Drink 2005-2010, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2003

Raspberries, cherries, and strawberries can be discerned throughout the aromatic and flavor profiles of the 2001 Chambertin. Dominated by fruit, this appealing wine reveals admirable concentration and depth. Its firm tannic backbone is present, but ripe. It should be consumed between 2005 and 2010. Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry and roasted herbs on the nose; a bit less vivacious than the Clos de Beze. Then sweetly oaky and rich, with lovely inner-mouth aromatics but not quite the class or detail of the Clos de Beze. A strong component of charred, chocolatey oak currently overshadows the wine's fruit. Finishes with sweet, suave tannins and excellent persistence.
