Tasting notes
The 2022 Syrah Block 16 opens with a cool-toned freshness as airy notes of rubbed sage, cardamom and dusty earth give way to dried black cherries. It envelops the palate with silken depths of ripe red and black fruits offset by hints of citrus and savory spice. Hulking tannins define the finish, contrasted by a bump of residual acidity as a bitter dark chocolate tinge lingers long.

The 2022 Syrah Block 16 WeatherEye Vineyard was matured for 18 months in 500-liter oak puncheons, 50% new. On the nose, its new-oak character is intrusive, with overt coffee and allspice tones over cassis and forest floor. The full-bodied palate is also focused on oak, offering more overt spice than fruit. It has somewhat astringent tannins, dampened freshness and an oaky finish. 97 cases produced.
Coming from the highest parcel (the northside of Red Mountain), the 2022 Syrah Block 16 has a downright exotic edge in its red and blue fruits as well as notes of game, leather, and violets. This carries to a medium to full-bodied red that has sweet tannins, a layered, nicely concentrated mouthfeel, and outstanding length. I absolutely love its purity as well as its balance.
