Tasting notes
Opaque magenta. Powerful dark berry preserve and cherry cola scents are complemented by exotic spice, incense and candied violet notes. Sappy and densely packed, offering energetic black raspberry, cherry liqueur, floral pastille and spicecake flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Polished tannins build steadily on the strikingly long, penetrating and finely detailed finish, which leaves behind smoky mineral and juicy dark berry notes.

The 2019 Cuvée Jean is a finished barrel sample due to be bottled in August. Made with 30% new oak, it has a vibrant perfume of cassis with classic notes of aniseed, violets and tar. The palate is grainy and fresh with a plethora of dark, spicy fruits and a long finish. I expect this will gain more detail and nuance after it is bottled and released.
Another juicy barrel sample, the 2019 Cuvee Jean is a blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier offering notes of cassis, bay leaf, crushed stone, and pepper. Young and unevolved, it’s full-bodied, with good acidity. This very juicy and elegant red is nicely balanced, pure, and seamless.
