The 2019 El Toro is a finished barrel sample of co-fermented Garnacha (90%), Syrah (6%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (4%), inspired by the Priorat region in Spain and made from gobelet-pruned Garnacha vines grown in the James Berry vineyard. Medium ruby, it opens with tones of olive, coffee and charcuterie with a core of warm red berry fruit. The palate is supple and fruity with polished tannins and expansive spiciness and perfume, a lifted, layered expression that feels very complete—this is due to be bottled in August 2021.

The 2019 El Toro is certainly in the same league. Based on 82% Grenache, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Syrah, it has slightly more finesse and less structure than the 2018 and is beautifully balanced on the palate. With plenty of red and black fruits as well as floral nuances, it should drink nicely right out of the gate, yet I see no reason it won’t keep for a decade.
