Score 85/100 · Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate, Sep 2024

The 2022 Strayts spent 16 months in 47% new French oak and leads with a shy, muddled nose of dark fruit and cocoa powder and tobacco. The palate is thick and rich, concluding with a hollow, disjointed finish that manages to be both chocolaty and tangy. This is a blend of 83% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petite Sirah, 1% Tempranillo and 1% Sangiovese.

Ripe black cherries, chocolate, saddle leather, and cedary herb and tobacco notes all emerge from the 2022 Strayts, a ripe, full-bodied, round, straight-up sexy Merlot (there are small amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and a few other Italian varieties) that has ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Aged 16 months in 47% new French oak, this beauty is well worth your time and money and will evolve for a solid decade.
