The 2012 Barolo Riserva has a ton of power, but I am not sure the fruit will outlive the tannins. Hints of dried cherry, tobacco, smoke and sage start to develop with aeration, but the 2012 remains potent and reticent to its core. I don't see the 2012 ever being in optimal balance.

Showing some of the signs of a warm vintage, the 2012 Barolo Riserva offers plump and dark fruit with light shadings of spice, licorice and tar. Like the other new releases from Borgogno presented here, this wine lacks focus and clarity. The fruit seems muddled, and I'm not sure why this is. I suggest giving the wine more time to unfold and relax in the bottle.
Lots of balsamic, wet earth, cedar, dried red cherries and spices on the nose here. Full-bodied and chewy with plenty of drying tannins. Drink from 2021.

One of Piedmont’s oldest estates, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli, often known as just “Borgogno”, is archly traditional. Favouring long macerations and extended ageing in Slavonian cask, it is best known for its impressive Barolos, especially the prized late releases from its extensive library stock.
