Tasting notes
Made from purchased grapes, the 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Grands Epenots (Maison Louis Jadot) wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, warm spices, rich soil tones and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a charming core of fruit, lively acids and refined tannins, this is very promising.

The 2019 Pommard Grands Epenots 1er Cru, which is bought half in wine and half in grapes, has a very expressive and almost Volnay-like bouquet of ebullient red cherry, raspberry, violet and blood orange aromas. The palate is very well balanced, offering succulent red berry fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Fleshy yet structured, as you would expect from this vintage. Very smooth on the finish. This is a noble Côte de Beaune from Jadot and maybe their best cuvée from that part of Burgundy.
Cask sample. Deeper garnet than any of the Volnays. Bright, healthy hue. Intense, deep-flavoured with a suitable Pommard character to contrast with the Volnays. Intense, heady nose with lots of juiciness on the palate and still some slightly raw tannins that will doubtless fall into place. If I were to be extra extra picky I’d say the follow-through/finish was less than dramatic – even a bit sudden – but it certainly expresses the climat. Down to very slight bitterness on the end. (JR)
About the producer

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
