(these vines are more than 80 years old): Bright red-ruby. Musky, soil-driven aromas of black cherry, licorice and stone; the calcaire influence is apparent. Taut and backward but smooth, showing more generosity and depth of flavor than the Ouzeloy. A note of crushed stone carries through a lively finish. This will rely as much on its acidity as on its tannins for longevity. Pierre-Jean Roty reported that pHs for the estate's 2013--and 2012s--are in the relatively low 3.3 range.

The 2013 Marsannay Boivin has a less expressive bouquet compared to the exuberant les Ouzeloy, but it gradually opens to reveal attractive blackberry and raspberry notes interlaced with cold limestone. The palate is nicely structured, quite precise and focused with a linear, saline finish that feels long in the mouth. Excellent.
