Tasting notes
We had a preview of the 2022 Arbois Pupillin Chardonnay (white wax), a warm year with early ripening (as I could see in the jars of grapes they keep from exactly the same date every year). They got very healthy grapes that year, harvested from the 1st of September (starting with the reds), and the Chardonnay was picked the 5th of September. The destemmed grapes had two months of maceration, and fermentation finished without problems. The wine is only incipient; it displays a cloudy bright yellow-green color, and the nose is a little closed and reductive, a little toasty, smoky and rich. This has a round palate, coherent with the weather from the year, with a faint bitterness in the finish. It opened up with time in the glass, and the nose got clearer too. This is only a very rough sketch of what the eventual bottled wine could be; it's more a matter of providing information about it than giving it a hypothetical score... The idea is to bottle it sooner rather than later.
