The 2018 Castera offers ample brambly blackberry and black plum notes on the nose, mixed with cedar and light sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and well structured. All it lacks is a bit of complexity and finesse on the saline, briny finish. But overall, this will do.

Cru bourgeois supérieur. 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. Dark and leafy with a hint of vanilla oak. Good depth of fruit on the palate – intense and broader than expected. Stays fresh. Tannins firm but honed. A little strict but should age. (JL)
