Score 87/100 · Drink 2015-2018, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jun 2016

Tasted at Justerini & Brooks agency tasting in London. The Château Grand Village 2003 now seems fully mature on the nose with plenty of damp earth, even nutty notes developing in the glass that turn more ferrous with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with more freshness than the aromatics suggest. It has a pleasant grainy texture with a slightly abrupt, piquant finish. Drink this now, as it will not improve further.

This property has been in the Guinaudeau family since 1980 and is planted with 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc on clay-limestone soils. Very deep crimson with a notably luscious but lots of freshness too on the nose (unusual for a right bank 2003). Just medium weight. Lively but with a slightly inky finish. (JR)

The owners of Ch Lafleur have lavished the same sort of care on the wine of their home property in Mouillac just north of the Côtes de Francs. Merlot is enlivened by 20% Cabernet Franc grown on clay limestone which gives it notable freshness. This is certainly not deep compared with a successful Pomerol but is far superior to most AC Bordeaux Supérior. (JR)
