Score 17/20 · Drink 2026-2035, Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2026

Full bottle 1,338 g. 65% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot from Luján de Cuyo at 1,000 m, planted in 1928. Macerated in 50-hl tanks for three to four weeks, manual pigeage, 16 months in new French oak barrels. Floral nose (rich, dank, sultry, like a florist shop) and oozing with slow, sensuous, vanilla-sweet juice. Damsons, cooked cherries, cumin and black cardamom. Tannins that hyphenate the fruit, pulling elements closer together; tannins that put dashes ini place, creating pauses and tangents through the flow of fruit and spice. Beef jus on the finish. A handsome wine. (TC)

Blending 65% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Unus is grippy from the onset, classically structured into a bold, full-bodied powerhouse of big red fruit flavor and sinewy texture. This could use more time in the cellar; enjoy best 2028-2033. Mendel was founded in 2002 by Roberto de La Mota, son of Argentine winemaker Don Raul de La Mota, after studying in France. Mendel’s vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo date back to 1928, and it also maintains vineyards in Valle de Uco’s Paraje Altamira. In 1996 Roberto established Terrazzas de los Andes for Bodega Chandon and also worked at Cheval des Andes. He is credited with importing Argentina’s first American rootstocks and many new grape varieties.

The 2021 Unus combines 65% Malbec (from Mayor Drummond and Altamira) with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot (both from Perdriel). It opens with a distinctively Bordelais-influenced bouquet of pencil shavings, graphite, dried herbs and a powerful core of black and blue fruits. The palate is sleek, polished and compact, seamlessly transitioning to a lush, drying and savory finish with grippy but refined tannins. This could use another year or two to further digest its élevage, and as with much of the Mendel portfolio, it should develop beautifully well past its 10th birthday.

A full-bodied red with violets, plums, blueberries, chocolate orange and sweet tobacco on the nose, with vanilla pods. Firmly structured, with broad and dusty layers and a lengthy, spicy finish. Malbec, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Better after 2024.
