Tasting notes
A prodigious Carmignano, this 1997 is made primarily from Sangiovese, with 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot added. It offers spectacular aromatics consisting of cherry jam, chocolate, cedar, spice, and earth. The color is an opaque ruby/purple, and the wine possesses great purity, terrific texture, a rich, fleshy, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a seamless finish. Drink this opulent effort over the next 5-7 years. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Deep, dark ruby to the rim. Seamless, expressive nose combines sweet plum and cassis fruit and subtle oak. Sweet in flavor and sensual in texture, consistent from start to finish. A rare combination of finesse and power. High-level winemaking. La Piaggia, behind the winemaking of Alberto Antonini, is the rising star in Carmignano, with four excellent vintages in a row since 1994.
