The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru is more loose-knit, a touch more diffuse than its 2011 counterpart at the moment: light red berry fruit, pressed rose petals and a whiff of damp soil. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, crisp and edgy, building nicely in the mouth and revealing superior delineation and mineralité than the 2011 on the finish. I can see the potential here. Great energy and focus, this is one to watch. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots has a complex bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, sandalwood and damp undergrowth, a hint of wilted violet emerging with time. The palate is fresh and pure on the entry, marked by supple, saturated tannin, layers of red cherry and strawberry and demonstrating impressive density on the finish that betrays some stem addition. This is a wine that is determined to make an impression and it does so without ostentation or vulgarity. Tasted September 2016.

Funky nose. Pretty severe on the palate. For traditionalists. Very chewy end. Maybe it just needs time? (JR)

Firm crimson. Earthy in a rather beguiling way – it really does smell like a walk in the forest! It’s pretty firm and stolid on the palate but I think it will get there, after quite a time. There is ripe fruit in the middle. (JR)
