Score 92/100 · Drink 2022-2038, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Feb 2022

Ready to drink, lighter in frame than the 2005 and 2006 but the fruit is precise and finessed, and we are in the heart of St Julien here, with mouthwatering power and minerality. Cassis bud, liqourice root, a whisper away from fully ripe, but mouthwatering and moriesh. Harvest September 20 to October 13, making the most of the Indian summer, and allowing this high level of Cabernet Sauvignon. Mathieu Bordès first full vintage, 60% new oak. Eric Boissenot consultant.

The 2007 Lagrange was picked from 12 September and 18 October - a vintage when they waited and waited to obtain ripeness. Deep in colour, the bouquet feels a little disjointed on the nose after the previous two vintages, but it gradually coheres with black/red fruit, sandalwood and clove aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. This feels focused and pliant with lovely blackcurrant and white pepper notes towards the finish. This is a finely crafted wine for the vintage. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Lagrange has a crisp and focused, graphite-tinged bouquet that is well defined, showing more precision than many of its Saint Julien peers. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, grippy in the mouth, with cedar and sage towards the finish. There is impressive body and presence conferred by this Lagrange that is aging with style (as this Saint Julien has a propensity to do in more challenging growing seasons). This is one to watch. Tasted February 2017.
