Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2025, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

A much more masculine and mineral expression of Pinot Noir, the 2013 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard comes from a site located to the south of Rosella's and just beside Soberanes. This is a slightly warmer terroir than Rosella's and the soils here are all sandy loam. Fermented with 15% whole clusters and aged in 65% new oak, it gives up lots of darker berry fruits, sous bois, crushed rock and peppery herbs characteristics to go with a full-bodied, rich, concentrated style on the palate. It took the most time to open up and has ample tannin, so another year in bottle is recommended here.

Deep ruby color. Heady aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry-cola, vanilla and licorice, with a spicy topnote that builds in the glass. Velvety and seamless in the mouth, offering sappy, penetrating boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors that stain the palate. Strikingly intense but not at all heavy, finishing with silky tannins and noteworthy power, focus and persistence.

Pretty deep crimson with a pale rim. Heady wine with a hint of ‘California wood’ smell. Mid to heavy weight with strong sweetness. Just a little syrupy and hot on the end. (JR)
