Dark purple. Potent smoke- and spice-accented cherry and black currant scents are complicated by suggestions of olive, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering densely packed dark fruit flavors that gain energy and become spicier with aeration. Powerful yet energetic and sharply focused, finishing with excellent persistence and dusty tannins that sneak in late.

Another site located in the northern end of the appellation (as are most of this estate's parcels), the 2012 Cote Rotie Bertholon comes from mostly clay soils and vines planted in 1972. This site was also purchased by Ogier in 2012. Sporting an inky ruby color, with lots of minerality in its smoked herbs, crushed rock, smoked earth and dark fruits, it's full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and has plenty of ripe tannic structure. Reminiscent of a wine from Grandes Places (which lies just above it) with its masculine, darker style, give this beauty a few years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15 years.
