One of the best wines that I've ever drunk from Verset, the 1995 Cornas behaves like it's over a decade younger, with an explosively perfumed bouquet that evokes ripe red and dark fruits, incense, potpourri and blood orange, with a smoky mineral quality building in the glass. It stains the palate with intense black raspberry, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that put on weight and gain sweetness on the back half while maintaining vibrancy. Densely packed yet lively, even lithe, the wine finishes sweet and extremely long, with slow-building tannins and resonating florality. This was a superb showing for this wine, which has long been a personal favorite of mine.

Verset's excellent, nearly outstanding 1995 Cornas offers a deep purple color, followed by a sweet, fragrant nose of jammy cassis fruit intermixed with minerals, licorice, and spice. Full-bodied, with copious spice, as well as impressive extraction of ripe fruit, this medium to full-bodied, surprisingly accessible Cornas can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15 years. As a postscript, I just consumed the 1983 and 1985 vintages of Verset's Cornas with great pleasure. The 1983 remains extremely unevolved and young, as does the 1985, but the latter vintage possesses more sweet, up-front fruit, and represents a glorious example of Cornas.
