Score 93/100 · Drink 2016-2036, Robert Parker, Mar 2016

The 2012 Calluna Estate from Chalk Hill is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec. An elegant and beautiful wine with a deep ruby/purple color, Bordeaux-like minerality, crème de cassis, licorice, earth and spice. The tannins are sweet, the wine medium to full-bodied, complex and supple. This is a beauty that should drink well for 15-20 years. Impressive.

(this wine is proprietor David Jeffrey's flagship bottling; 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec): Bright, deep red with ruby highlights. Complex aromas of singed raspberry, coffee, mocha, mint and licorice. Sweet, spicy and lush, offering a fine-grained texture but a bit less give than the Colonel's Cabernet. I like the balance of subtle sweetness and acidity, but this brooding young wine will need time. Made in a distinctly Old World style, this blend finishes subtle and long, with a medicinal cast and a fine dusting of tannins. (ST)
