The 1989 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett is poured by no less than Egon Müller himself. It has a wonderful nose with superb delineation and touches of white mushroom and fennel. It's fully mature yet still has more than a spring in its step. The palate is underpinned with knife-edge acidity that effortlessly counters the viscosity. There is real elegance and poise towards the finish, which, if blind, I would place more in the Spätlese category. It is at its peak, but it will remain there for some time.
