(includes 7% cabernet sauvignon): Good medium ruby. Wild, reduced nose offers blackberry, flinty minerals and game. Dense and vibrant, with highly concentrated yet seamless flavors of blackberry, blueberry, crushed rock and smoked meat. At once creamy and firm, finishing with suave tannins, enticing sweetness and excellent lift and perfume. I would not be surprised if this wine shut down in bottle at some point in the near future. The 2008 Sequel was dumb as a post during a tasting I conducted in Seattle in 2012, then glorious in July of 2013.

The best vintage of this cuvee to date, the 2010 Syrah Sequel, made by John Duval of John Duval Wines in Barossa, is a blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 18 months in 65% new French oak. Inky purple in color, it is decidedly meaty on the nose, with layers of black fruit, smoked meat, pepper and toast all emerging from the glass. Classy and rich on the palate, it dishes out a medium to full-bodied texture, great acidity and a blockbuster finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Despite the overall richness level, the overall profile here is downright elegant and perfectly balanced; while already delicious, it will evolve gracefully for over a decade. Drink now-2020. Producing their first vintage in 2003 and created by Alan Shoup, who was formerly the CEO of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Long Shadow was founded on the idea of bringing world class winemakers to Washington State to make their own top cuvee. Each winemaker gets full control over all aspect of the winemaking and is involved throughout the growing season as well. In addition to the wines reviewed here, I was also able to taste a full lineup of their initial 2003 releases, all of which were in fine form and still youthful. www.longshadows.com
