At the minimum, Girardin's Beaune Clos des Mouches requires 6-8 years of cellaring. It may keep for 20 years, impressing some wine intellectuals, but I am not sure readers who view wine from a hedonistic perspective will ever find much enjoyment in such a rustic powerhouse. The 1993s are impressively-endowed, black-colored wines offering copious quantities of toasty new oak, ferocious tannin levels, powerful personalities, and shotgun-like fire power. However, each wine possesses an astringent side, and despite what is obviously admirable concentration, these are stubbornly backward, medium-bodied wines with massive doses of tannin and wood.
