The 2011 Haut-Condissas has a commendable, clean and pure nose with ample blackberry and crushed violet aromas, even if it has nowhere near the intellectual capacity of the 2010. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, masculine and structured but with sufficient fruit to back it up. Again, I admire the balance of this wine although it does cut away quickly and leaves you wanting more. Perhaps this is another vintage where I would have tweaked the new oak down from 100% to allow the terroir to show through. Tasted at the Haut-Condissas vertical at the property.

The luxury cuvee from proprietor Jean Guyon, this wine is a blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. A sleeper of the vintage, it reveals the fatness and fleshiness of a top-notch Merlot married with the structure of Petit Verdot and the two Cabernets. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by spicy, cedary, underbrush, tobacco leaf and creme de cassis characteristics. Drink this medium-bodied winner over the next 7-8 years.
Crimson. Savoury almost leathery nose. Ripe start and less obvious acidity and hollowness than most. Well done though a bit astringent on the finish. (JR)
