Tasting notes
Starting out, the 2011 Cornas Brise Cailloux offers up textbook Cornas wildness with its gamy, herbal-styled bouquet delivering brilliant fruit (black cherry, raspberry, blueberry), loads of meatiness, spring flowers and searing minerality. Seeing 18 months all in old wood, this medium to full-bodied beauty has incredibly purity of fruit, great acidity and a knockout finish. Enjoy it over the coming 10-15 years. Made by Matthieu Barret, these two Cornas were standouts in a larger, appellation-wide Cornas tasting that I did. They are classic, gorgeous wines that left me wondering where I could buy some. Tough and quite tart. Serious stuff with too much acidity to think of drinking yet. A certain charm… and impressively long. (JR)
