Here's a statement wine from Podere Brizio. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is certified organic (although some of that goodwill is surrendered to the heavy and environmentally unfriendly glass bottle used in the packaging). This expression from a classic vintage takes a little longer to open and come into view. With some patience, you get wild berry aromas with grilled herb and pressed flowers. The finish is lean, polished and smooth. However, this wine never fully blossoms in the glass, and the mouthfeel is shy or subdued, especially within the context of the growing season. Maybe more bottle aging will help bring out more intensity in this 6,000-bottle release.

Very heavy bottle! Just mid ruby with narrow bricky rim. Deep, cherry-liqueur nose. Bags of sweet, ripe, embryonic fruit but the considerable dose of acidity gives it shape. Fine, long, sandy tannins. (WS)

Crushed strawberries come together with notes of cedar, leather and underbrush as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva unfurls in the glass. This boasts silky textures and a savory mix of wild berries and mineral tones. It leaves a coating of fine tannins to linger, along with rosy inner florals and hints of cherry. The 2016 will require a number of years to come fully into focus, and it leaves me searching for more depth.

Black-cherry and berry aromas with some flower and sandalwood character. Complex. Full-bodied and layered, with lots of gorgeous, silky tannins and a long finish. Give it time. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2024.
