Tasting notes
The fabulous Puligny-Montrachet La Truffiere displays earth, underbrush, and truffle aromas as well as an awesomely precise, balanced, and elegant personality. This feminine wine is highly-concentrated, bright, refined, and has magnificent definition of mineral, stone, and spiced pear flavors intermingled with tangy lemon notes for additional complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010. I was tremendously impressed with the quality of Morey's 1996s. While I generally had a slight preference for most vignerons' 1995s because of that vintage's extraordinary concentration, I feel that 1996's crisp, focused, and vibrant profile married admirably well with Morey's rich, plump, and ripe winemaking style. These are some of the finest wines I have tasted from this consistently first rate estate. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel (205) 980-8802.

Much less expressive, brooding aromas of pit fruits and vanillin oak. Fatter and sweeter than the Caillerets, but very young and almost aggressively unevolved. Quite powerful on the back end but almost painful today.
