The 2018 Barolo del Commune di Monforte d’Alba is a gorgeous wine in this range from Diego Conterno. Deep and resonant in the glass, the 2018 exudes character from the first taste. Dark fruit, spice, leather, tobacco, chocolate and incense are some of the notes that build as this deep, expressive Barolo shows off its considerable charm. Early signs of maturity in the aromatics suggest the 2018 is best enjoyed over the near and medium term. For my palate, the Monforte village Barolo is the gem in this range.

Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby. A savoury, minerally, deep, complex nose that still is a little closed on the fruit and with a hint of old leather. Taut cherry fruit layered with lots of sandy tannins. Very long and gripping and juicy at the same time but still a little embryonic. (WS)

The 2018 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is a blend taken from Pajana and Gris, both of which fall into the Ginestra cru these days. Layered and pliant in the glass, the 2018 offers fine balance for the year, with lovely proportion and plenty of character. Dark cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and spice build nicely in a Barolo of charm and seduction. It spent 24 months in cask. The Comune Barolo is the hidden gem in the range, in my view. I loved it.

Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Same minerally, iodine nose as their classic Barolo, but with more concentration of fruit. Hints of sweet, dried fruit adding to the complexity. Full cherry palate with bags of grainy, puckering tannins. Great tannic bite on the finish. Lots of juice and stuffing and tightly structured. (WS)
