Score 16.5/20 · Drink 2020-2035, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Apr 2026

Full bottle 1,327 g. Bottled in 2002. Touriga Francesa (30%), Touriga Nacional (30%), Tinta Roriz (20%), Tinto Cão (10%), Tinta Barroca (10%). Foot trodden in granite lagares. After the harvest, the wine remains in the Douro region. It is transported to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia the following spring, beginning the usual ageing process in oak vats. RS 115 g/l, pH 3.6. Mid brick red. Sweet aroma of dried and senescent red fruits with a touch of caramlised oranges. Sweet, of course, the sweetness balanced by the tannins. Full in the mouth, the tannins aged to smoothness. Ready to drink but still has a slight and welcome grip. I’m surprised that it’s relatively simple though it is rich and smooth. (JH)

This shows some early development and tertiary complexity. Expect toasted, balsamic, blackberry notes with dates, figs, licorice and subtle earthiness. Sweet and fine-grained, though the tannins are not yet fully dissolved. Drink now.

This 2000 vintage has been re-released in a series of six special bottles. Delicious dark chocolate and prune aromas on the nose, with superb purity and clarity of fruit on the palate – red cherry, blackberry, even a bit of rhubarb. Varied and complex and lengthy and really lip-smacking. Finishes with a twist or two of black pepper. Everything great about port, perhaps at the ideal age for satisfying everyone. A masterpiece. The 2000 Sandeman Vintage Porto has an intense, voluptuous bouquet with layers of creme de cassis, licorice, plum jam and fig scents that come out and grab you by the lapels. The palate is rounded and opulent on the entry with ripe licorice-tinged black fruit, marmalade, cloves and licorice, the finish well-defined and showing a little more structure than the impressive 1999. There is also a pleasant saline note adding another dimension on the aftertaste and inviting another sip. This needs another 5 to 8 years in bottle, but it will be worth the wait. Drink 2019-2040.
