Tasting notes
Score 92/100 · Drink 2021-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2023

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is impeccable at age 20. It is also much more old-school in profile and overall texture than the wines Mark Herold has made here since 2003. Hints of cedar, tobacco, licorice and leather add nuance. This deep Cabernet still has plenty of tannin, but I would prefer to drink it before the fruit fades. More than anything else, the 2001 shows how much potential this property on Moon Mountain has.

This organically farmed Sonoma Mountain vineyard has produced a 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon with a deep ruby/purple color, sweet fruit, and notes of licorice, black currants, herbs, and earth. Medium to full-bodied and well-made, if additional complexity and nuances emerge, it will merit an even higher score. Drink it over the next decade. Tel. (707) 933-1700

Full medium ruby. Pungent aromas of black raspberry, cola, woodsmoke and spicy oak. Juicy, supple and fresh, with slightly green-edged dark berry flavors. Offers good texture and a refreshing tartness but turned a bit dry with aeration.
