The 2012 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno shows a dark appearance with layers of dark fruit, smoke and crushed mineral. In fact, this vintage shows a more prominent mineral character compared to the other two vintages (2013 and 2011) reviewed here. This Barolo offers some background sternness and austerity that should soften with time.

Pale ruby. Lightly cheesy nose. Sweet start and then extremely transparent. Drying tannins on the end. Really vibrant confident finish with some density. I think it will get there. (JR)
A deceptively medium-bodied wine, the 2012 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno hits the palate with good intensity but in the classic, mid-weight Alessandria style. Sweet tobacco, dried cherries, mint and tobacco give the wine much of its aromatic nuance. The 2012 opens up a bit in the glass, but it remains a touch lean and compact which is unusual for this wine.
Verduno. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Very tight and closed on the nose. Brooding and embryonic and really bursting with potential. Big tannic structure but not oppressive. (WS)
