Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Maltroye was showing too much sulfur dioxide on the nose, which made it difficult to fathom the terroir here. The palate is quite concentrated and balanced, the acidity well judged with orange rind and mandarin notes from start to finish. This feels comparatively linear and straight-laced compared to its peers, but it could improve once that sulfur recedes. Tasted May 2016.

Very nervy, with a hint of struck matches on the nose but very clean and precise on the palate. More open than many a Maltroye/Maltroie. Mid weight and very fresh and lively. Substantial and solid. Lots of acidity but very clean fruit too. Bravo! (JR)
