Tasting notes
Opaque ruby. Cherry liqueur, dark berries, mocha, pipe tobacco and smoky oak on the deeply perfumed nose, along with notes of licorice and cola. Broad and densely packed on the palate, offering chewy dark fruit, candied licorice and floral pastille flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. The powerful, tannic finish repeats the cherry, licorice and smoke notes and hangs on with strong, spicy tenacity. Give this brawny Cabernet some patience or, at the very least, some time in a decanter.

Notes of cedar, pipe tobacco and cassis mark the nose of d'Arenberg's 2014 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a structured wine, being medium-bodied and framed by ripe but firm tannins that lead into a youthfully astringent finish. The flavors are spot on, speaking of the variety's typical flavor range, without tipping into over-ripeness, and the French oak is nicely balanced and adds hints of vanilla, cedar and dried spices on the lingering finish.
