The big, rich 2013 Coach Gun Proprietary Red is a blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There’s actually a whopping 30% Cabernet Franc in it, the biggest component part of the wine. This is a beauty. Sweet licorice, black and red currants, camphor and a touch of charcoal jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Medium to full-bodied, it exhibits complex elements in both its aromatics and flavor profile. It is full-bodied, rich, layered and ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. I was somewhat surprised at its level of alcohol (15.6%), which is beautifully disguised behind the lavish fruit.

The 2013 Coach Gun, Priest Ranch's Red Blend, is incredibly dense and primary today. There is plenty of inky fruit, crème de cassis, spice and sweet French oak, but here, too, the tannins are quite powerful. I am curious to see if the 2013 will find a bit more poise and overall balance with more time in bottle. The blend is 30% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Malbec and 15% Petit Verdot.
