Score 93/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

The 2021 Angeli Syrah, from own-rooted vines, has pure aromas of blueberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, lilac and soft herbal wafts, with more nuance revealed as it spends time in the glass. The full-bodied palate offers concentrated, perfumed fruit and abundant yet powdery tannins. Sparks of fresh acidity highlight pretty floral tones on the long finish. It will benefit from 2-3 years in bottle. 560 cases were made.

The 2021 Syrah Angeli is absolutely gorgeous. It captures a striking combination of Ballard Canyon intensity and finesse, with sweet tannins and gorgeous mid-palate pliancy. Own-rooted vines, now 20+ years old, yield a Syrah of uncommon finesse. The 2021 is a bit lighter than most years, but that actually works well for a wine that has been a behemoth at times. This is all class.

The 2021 Syrah Angeli might be one of the finest Syrahs I've tasted from this estate. Seeing one-third whole clusters and aged 18 months in neutral French oak, its medium ruby/plum hue (it's not opaque) is followed by a sensational bouquet of wild strawberries, blueberries, violets, smoked herbs, and ground black pepper. With medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it has a layered, expansive mouthfeel, building tannins, no hard edges, and the iron first in a velvet glove like style that warrants 2-4 years of bottle age. It will have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

From a 2002 planting of own-rooted mass selection. 33% whole-cluster fermentation in concrete with native yeasts. Aged 15 months in a 100% neutral French puncheon. Dark garnet. Aromas of bloody meat, blackcurrant and blackberries. Thick, mouth-coating tannins wrap around a core of stony blackberry, iodine and cassis. Crushed rocks and a touch of violets pervade the finish. Powerful and compelling, but give this one some time. (AY)
