Big, evolved and sweet – almost porty in fact – with very chewy tannins that I doubt will ever recede in this hot, dry vintage. This is begging to be drunk! (JR)

As I reported last year, the real sleeper, and a terrific wine that is still in the marketplace and selling for a song is the 2003 Vacqueyras, a blockbuster wine that is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah aged completely in cement tanks and old wood. Deep ruby/purple with a glorious nose of framboise, black cherry liqueur, and dusty, loamy soil notes, this wine is full-bodied and has low acidity but beautiful purity and richness. Medium red. Explosive kirsch and cassis aromas, along with a strong smoked meat quality. Lush and ripe, with powerful cherry and dark berry flavors complicated by licorice and espresso accents. Supple tannins give structure to this weighty, concentrated wine and carry through the long, impressively sweet finish. Made from roughly 95% syrah, this is the estate's current release-and it will need some cellar time.

Domaine des Tours is a separate label to Ch. des Tours, however both ranges are made at the same Vacqueyras property. Part of the Rayas galaxy and made by Emmanuel Reynaud, the wines are a source of great value and offer a glimpse of the Rayas style.
