Score 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2011

(from volcanic soil at 2,450 feet in the Sierra Foothills; 66% mourvedre, 26% grenache and 8% counoise; around 15% alcohol): Good medium red. Deep, aromatic nose combines cherry, chocolate, tree bark, spices and pepper, with licorice and black olive nuances emerging with aeration. A sweet but fresh fruit bomb, with flavors of red berry liqueur, tar and olive dominating. Showed the almost roasted ripeness of some 2007s with aeration but without losing its shape; in fact, this wine seemed to gain in intensity and lift. Captivating mourvedre-based wine.

Beautifully perfumed and unique, the 2007 Keplinger Caldera is a blend of 66% Mourvedre, 26% Grenache, and 8% Counoise, that possesses a ruby red color, as well as savory, complex aromatics of framboise and spiced cherries that are intermixed with blood, potpourri, and iron. Medium to full bodied on the palate, it shows a supple, silky texture, beautiful focus and edge, bright acidity, and a clean, long finish. Outstanding, this should drink well over the next decade.
