Deep, full red-ruby to the rim. Sexy, slightly truffley aromas of black raspberry, leather, mocha, tobacco leaf, black licorice and cocoa powder. Enters the mouth suave, savory and fine-grained, showing restrained sweetness and considerable complexity and definition to its dark raspberry, cocoa powder and spice flavors. A bit less liqueur-like than it appeared to be upon its release, thanks in part to nicely integrated acidity. Finishes with a firm dusting of serious tannins and lovely subtle rising length. I happened to taste this wine next to Philippe Melka's 2001 Metisse and found it quite similar in its flavor profile, if perhaps a touch sweeter.

The top wine, the Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red, emerges from a vineyard northeast of Calistoga. The inky/purple-colored 2001 Jericho Canyon Proprietary Red offers up a sumptuous perfume of licorice, espresso roast, graphite, blackberries, and currants. Unctuously-textured, with tremendous purity, high tannin, and a long finish, it reminds me of the old style vintages of Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon from the late sixties to the mid-seventies. Full medium ruby. Superripe nose is distinctly porty yet bright. Then lush and deep in the mouth, with explosive, superripe flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Boasts terrific sweetness and depth but distinctly bound-up today, even a bit medicinal. Finishes with powerful but thoroughly ripe tannins. Not now as harmonious as it seemed from barrel, but this may well merit a higher score with bottle aging.
