The 2011 Barolo Cerretta is a bit darker and more voluptuous than the Prapò. The richness of the fruit also serves to balance the tannins, resulting in a deep, sensual Barolo with enveloping texture and considerable appeal. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, leather and dark spices build to the creamy, inviting finish. There is plenty of tannin but also enough fruit to balance things out.

Serralunga d’Alba. Deep ruby with orange tinges. A little earthy, backward and dark on the nose. Same slow palate with bracing tannins and bags of fruit. (WS)

The 2011 Barolo Cerretta was my least favorite among Sergio Germano's new releases. The wine shows good fruit concentration with dark berry and blackberry that come into full view. But there is also a touch of cheese rind or dried apricot that underlines the difficulties encountered in the warm 2011 vintage. The bouquet is flatter and broader with less dimension compared to this estate's other stellar wines. It might need time to unwind and get past this awkward adolescence.

35 days on the skin. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet ripe nose with bags of fruit but without going over the top. Very youthful yet fruit driven, with ripe, powerful tannins. More approachable than Prapò and with lots of ageing potential. Carries its alcohol gracefully. Intense but with real class. (WS)
