(from rocky ash soil at an altitude of 2,500 feet): Good bright ruby. Very dark aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice, violet, dark chocolate and crushed rock. Densely packed, supple and tight; a bit inexpressive and medicinal today but with good harmonious acidity giving definition to the very primary flavors of black fruit and licorice. Finishes with serious tannins and a youthful toughness. Not at all a thick or sweet style, but this should reward five years of cellaring.
