Score 88/100 · Drink 2018-2035, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

At age ten, the 2005 Barolo Le Coste remains young, massively tannic and austere, with searing tannins that clamp down hard on the fruit. At this point, I doubt the 2005 will ever be in balance.

Good deep red, more saturated than the Sotto Castello di Novello. Much riper nose hints at sweet plum and marzipan. Broad, ripe and sweet, with a pliant texture and very good density to the flavors of red fruits, menthol and mint. Rich for the vintage yet light on its feet, finishing with broad, dusty, sweet tannins and lovely lift.

The 2005 Barolo Le Coste is rich, round wine loaded with ripe dark fruit, spices and sweet scents of French oak. With time in the glass, the wine's inner perfume emerges, offering layers of violets and black cherries that add further complexity. This fresh, vibrant Barolo needs at least another year or two in bottle for the broad tannins to integrate, but it is another very strong effort from Grimaldi.

Proprietor Ferruccio Grimaldi continues to show improvement, and these are the finest Barolos I have tasted from him thus far. The wines show more Nebbiolo expressiveness and better use of oak than has been the case in the past.
