Tasting notes
There are more than a quarter-million cases of Rombauer's 2022 Chardonnay, which boasts classic buttered movie-popcorn scents, bold peach notes and cinnamon-laced nuances. Aged in a mix of French and American oak (30% new), it's full-bodied, soft and approachable, with just a hint of warmth on the finish.

A Gallo property. Strongly oaky and lactic: the original model of California Chardonnay, with tons of oak persistence. There is sharp acid yet a certain flabbiness that seems somewhat artificial. Still incredibly fashionable among many drinkers, and for good reason – this is so pleasurable – but if you subscribe to Anything But Chardonnay, then steer clear. (RH)
