Score 89-91/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025

The second wine of this great estate, the 2024 Le Marquis De Calon Ségur is mostly Merlot yet includes 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, aging in 20% new oak. It has a vivid ruby hue as well as juicy black cherries, cassis, liquid violets, and graphite. This medium-bodied, pretty, elegant, lively, mid-weight second wine will shine right out of the gate.

The 2024 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is a blend of 63% Merlot (including some of the estate's best Merlots that didn't "fit" in the grand vin blend) and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon that attained 13.2% alcohol. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cassis, violets and bergamot, it's medium-bodied, round and supple, with a suave, polished style that's nicely balanced and complete. This is a very strong effort in the making.

Clearly skilful construction of the wines here, with precision and balance. Austerity on the finish, as is classic in Cabernet-dominant wines in 2024, with emphasis on cassis bud and slate, very pretty. 3.55 pH. 45hl/ha yield, 20% new oak. Harvest 23 September to 9 October. The 2024 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, matured in 20% new French oak for a planned 17 months, is missing some fruit concentration on the nose. Therefore, it comes across a little austere, especially when compared to recent vintages. The palate is simple with rounded tannins, fine acidity, light spiced black fruit and touches of brown spices on the finish. But it just lacks some bite and complexity, so this is one for earlier drinking.

Wedding gift lists traditionally include wine glasses or cutlery, but in 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour and president of the Bordeaux parliament, received a rather more impressive present: Château Calon.
