Tasting notes
From a cooler site on Chalk Hill Road, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon SJ Ranch offers stony, gravelly aromatics, with blackcurrant fruit and damp, forested earth. Persistent in its fruit, which unfolds with lavender, graphite, and plum skin, the structure builds and will be outstanding over the next couple decades.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon SJ Ranch Vineyard manages concentration and elegance, and its latent spicy accents suggest it will develop well in bottle. Deep ruby, it has generous layers of cassis, cast iron, salumi and pure violet perfume, continuing to unfold to accents of milk chocolate and bouquet garni as it spends time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate explodes with floral fruits supported by abundant, finely grained tannins, fresh acidity and a very long finish glittering with new French oak spice. The SJ Ranch deserves several more years in bottle to continue to develop. 267 cases will be released this month.
